“The Story of Plastic” with Planet Ninjas

“The Story of Plastic” was an eye-opener for anyone who hasn’t dwelled deep into the real problem of plastic. It not only covers the basic issue with plastic’s inability to naturally break down in nature but also the number of resources used and emissions released even before we use the plastic.

The movie teaches you that the problem with plastic is not just that the recycling system is deeply broken, but that there seems to be no end to the production of plastic. Production of plastic consumes a lot of water, oil and energy thus making it far worse for the environment than we imagined. The effects of plastic are seen all the way at fracking sites in deep Americas and at the low lying coastal communities of Islandic Asian countries.

Post our screening, the discussion with the Ninja community was a great success because it uncovered the lack of awareness about plastic and the fact that so much education was still missing.

Most of the questions revolved around what kind of plastic is actually recyclable and what really happens to it. A great resource to understand what actually ends up on earth forever and what gets recycled (at least part of it), is this article. While recycling seems like a decent option, it is our very strong opinion that the time for recycling is far gone. What we need is bigger, bolder solutions.

→ The “Big Polluters” or the bigger corporations need to invest more money in R&D for alternatives to single-use packaging.

→ There needs to be increased awareness about the REAL problems that single-use plastic causes and that alternatives exist.

→ Urgent actions to remove the existing plastic in the sea and find useful solutions to re-use, recycle or repurpose it.

→ Divestment from fossil fuels
