Some of the things on here do have DIY options but since this list is meant to provide easy sustainable swap options to people (especially those who are new to sustainability!), we have not currently included DIY/ make your own suggestions.

Sustainability Terms

Cruelty-free: Not tested on animals

Vegan: No animal-derived ingredients

Cleaner ingredients: usually means relatively environmentally safer ingredients and no chlorine bleach, phthalates, parabens, sulfates etc (please check as this list varies for each product)

Made in USA: mentioned as specified by the brand - more local, less transportation distance means less carbon emissions in transportation and hence better for the environment

Recycled plastic packaging: bottles/packaging made from recycled plastic instead of new/virgin plastic. This reduces demand for new plastic and hence drilling for petroleum, and also creates a demand for recycled plastic thus supporting the struggling recycling industry.

Tree-free paper: made from bamboo instead of trees from cutting forests. Bamboo grows much much faster with less resources compared to forests traditionally used for paper products

Sustainably sourced: refers to brands being conscious of the sourcing of raw materials - for example, paper products made from FSC certified sustainably sourced woods means the wood did not come from illegal logging, fragile ecosystems or clear cutting etc.
